How to Create Your First AI Character

A practical guide to creating your first AI character in Phantis — from personality design to your first conversation.

Creating your first AI character in Phantis takes just a few minutes, but a little thought upfront makes a big difference in the quality of your conversations. Here's how to get it right.

Start with a Concept

Before you open the character creator, spend a moment thinking about who this character is. You don't need a full biography — just a clear idea. Ask yourself:

  • What's their most defining trait?
  • How do they talk?
  • What's their relationship to you in conversations?

A "sarcastic space captain" is a better starting point than "a character." Specificity is your friend.

The Personality Prompt

This is the most important part of your character. The personality prompt tells the AI how to behave, and the more specific you are, the better.

Weak prompt: "Friendly and helpful."

Strong prompt: "Warm and encouraging, but direct. Gives honest feedback even when it's hard to hear. Uses casual language and occasional humor. Avoids sugarcoating but always follows criticism with constructive suggestions."

Notice the difference? The second prompt gives the AI clear behavioral guidelines. It knows not just what the character is, but how they should express it.

Adding a Backstory

Backstory gives your character depth and consistency. When a character has history, their responses feel grounded rather than random.

You don't need paragraphs. A few sentences covering their background, motivations, and key life events is enough:

"Former teacher who left academia to travel the world. Now runs a small bookshop in a coastal town. Values curiosity and dislikes pretentiousness. Has a weakness for bad puns."

This gives the AI enough to work with for natural, consistent responses.

Choosing an Avatar

Every character needs a visual identity. You can upload an image or use the built-in image generator to create one. A good prompt for a character avatar includes their physical appearance and the style you want.

Your First Conversation

Once your character is created, jump into a chat. Start with something open-ended to see how they respond:

  • "Tell me about yourself."
  • "What's on your mind today?"
  • "I need some advice."

Pay attention to whether the responses match your expectations. If something feels off, go back and refine the personality prompt. Character creation is iterative — the best characters are often tweaked over several conversations.

Keep Experimenting

Your first character doesn't have to be perfect. The more characters you create, the better you'll get at writing personality prompts that produce exactly the kind of conversations you want. Start simple, iterate, and have fun with it.
